The diary he kept while tending sheep forms the heart of My First Summer in the Sierra published in 1911, it enticed thousands of Americans to visit the Yosemite country. Having caught a glimpse of such magical places as Tuolumne Meadows and El Capitan, Muir ached to return, and in the summer of 1869 he signed on with a crew of shepherds and drove a flock of 2,500 woolly critters toward the headwaters of the Merced River. John Muir, a young Scottish immigrant, had not yet become the famed conservationist whom he liked to call "John o' the Mountains" when he first trekked into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada not long after the end of the Civil War. ![]()

![]() She was dependent on others at the beginning, but then became someone so extracted for the Ugly fifteen year old she was in the first book by the third book that I couldn’t connect to her perspective. Throughout the series, I didn’t like Tally’s personality. It was weird for characters to criticise how we live now!) They live off the land, with no uber-technology used for elaborate pranks. Tally and Shay discover a city that doesn’t subscribe to the government’s ideals. Is being Pretty really all that matters? Is being Ugly really that bad? What does it mean to be ugly? The series follows the two girls as they try and face what their government is doing to its people. Tally, the protagonist, just wants to be pretty. It was interesting to read a book that discussed beauty and how its presented in a way that didn’t seem glaringly obvious. When you pick up this book, you’re not bombarded with a social agenda to redefine beauty. When they turn sixteen, they become pretty, through surgery and genetic implants. The concept of this series is all people are born ugly. ![]() The idea that there were dystopian books before ‘The Hunger Games’ rose to popularity seems to astound people. One of the great heroes of the Iraq War, Staff Sergeant David Bellavia captures the brutal action and raw intensity of leading his Third Platoon, Alpha Company, into a lethally choreographed kill zone: the booby-trapped, explosive-laden houses of Fallujah's militant insurgents. “To read this book is to know intimately the daily grind and danger of men at war.”-Anthony Swofford, New York Times bestselling author of Jarhead Ricks, author of Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq and Making the Corps “They used to say that the real war will never get in the books. “A rare and gripping account of frontline combat.”-LTG (Ret.) It plays into the mellow tone of the album while showcasing an incredibly polished chorus, complete with Russell's guitar skills. Russell walks a fine line throughout his latest album, and opener "River's Edge" stands as his most solid effort. There's nothing wrong with a man in his late 40s/early 50s writing and recording music at this level, so long as the subject matter isn't overly personal and super sappy.
